The Dark Side Of AI: Why Humans Will Always Be Scared | Tech Donner

AI is changing our lives and the ways in which we work or communicate. From virtual assistants through to driverless cars, AI is simplifying/restructuring life. However, have you ever considered the dangers that AI brings along with it?

1. The Impact of Forced Labor on Job Displacement and Economic Volatility

AI has the potential to automate parts of many jobs, thereby threatening mass job displacement in sectors where tasks are routine or easily replaceable by algorithms. A McKinsey report, for example, suggested that up to 800 million jobs could disappear around the world over just over a decade due to automation.

2. Bias and Discrimination

AI systems may reinforce or worsen existing biases, resulting in unfair results as well. For example, these facial recognition systems have routinely been found to misidentify persons of color, leading to false arrests and wrongful convictions.

3. Missing Human Connection and Empathy

If we let AI take over the customer service and communications roles, humans may inadvertently start to lose necessary social skills and emotional intelligence. This might result in a decrease in empathy and increased social isolation.

4. Vulnerabilities and Cyber Attack

Cyberattacks that exploit vulnerabilities in AI-powered systems, accessed to override incorrect decision-making with fraudulent information, will only make the risk for data-sensitive individuals and organizations worse.

5. Self-Driving Driving Responsibility

The more autonomous AI becomes, the harder it is to determine accountability and decision. If an AI system fails or causes damage, who is at fault?

Rapid advances in AI, such as the creation of superintelligence, raises existential risks for humanity. We humans will inevitably be hunted by the long-awaited monster, if artificial intelligence were to slip out of our control and go haywire says Elon Musk.

Mitigating the Risks

Yes, AI is very dangerous, and yes, there might still be ways to prevent it. For AI to be beneficial for humanity:

1. Enforce strong rules and standards.

2. Fund AI education and reskilling initiatives.

3. Emphasize the design of AI from a human-first perspective

4. Promote openness and honesty.

The threats posed by AI are very real and keeping them in check is going to require a lot of work. By recognizing these hazards, and acting as one, we can reap the rewards of AI while taking care of collective safety.
