NVIDIA Synthetic Video Detector Can Detect Deepfake Videos

NVIDIA synthetic video detector can identify whether the video is real or AI-generated.

AI-generated videos have become so realistic that distinguishing them from real footage is increasingly difficult. While this benefits filmmakers and marketers, it creates challenges for those trying to verify viral clips. NVIDIA recently unveiled a potential solution for this issue at SIGGRAPH 2026.

What Is NVIDIA Synthetic Video Detector

The company unveiled the Synthetic Video Detector, a new NIM microservice built to answer one simple question: is this video real, or did AI make it? NVIDIA is expanding its “AI for Media” platform and being straightforward about it. Their team highlighted that while AI can create incredibly realistic fake videos, it can also be used to detect them.

How It Actually Works

The tool analyzes videos by looking at each frame individually rather than all at once. It uses two models, DINOv2 and DINOv3, to rate how “synthetic” each frame appears. These scores are then averaged to give an overall score for the entire video.

This isn’t a final judgment; think of it like a smoke detector: it signals where to investigate, rather than deciding something is fake right away. Newsrooms and platforms should use the score to identify questionable footage for closer examination, rather than simply labeling it as false and moving on.

Why This Matters

AI-generated videos and voices are already causing significant fraud, costing people and organizations millions. There have been instances where fake videos have been used to create false crime scenes, misleading emergency responders. As the technology improves, having tools to address this issue is becoming essential.

While this doesn’t solve the deepfake issue, having a quick and reliable filter is essential for newsrooms and platforms to assess questionable footage. It won’t replace human judgment, but it provides a helpful head start.
