The Government of Pakistan has launched a new fuel relief programme to help people deal with sharply rising petrol prices. Under the Prime Minister’s Special Relief Scheme, eligible users can receive Rs100 per litre in petrol relief on a limited monthly quota. Registration has now opened, and the government has introduced a simple SMS-based process that can be completed from home.
The scheme targets lower-income vehicle users in response to rising petrol prices due to global market disruptions, providing essential support without a price reduction for everyone.
Who Is Eligible for the Petrol Relief?
The programme targets users of motorcycles, rickshaws, and Qingqi rickshaws. Owners or users of cars with engines up to 800cc are also included.
Under the announced structure, two- and three-wheeler users can receive Rs100 per litre in relief on up to 20 litres of petrol per month. This means the maximum monthly benefit can reach Rs2,000.
For eligible cars with engines up to 800cc, the relief applies to up to 30 litres per month, providing a maximum benefit of Rs3,000.
The Economic Coordination Committee has further clarified that the scheme is restricted to non-commercial users and that relief is limited to one vehicle per user or owner.
How to Register for the Rs100 Petrol Relief: Step by Step
One of the notable features of the scheme is that applicants do not need to visit a government office to register.
According to Information Technology Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja, eligible applicants can register from home through SMS.
You need to send the following information to 9771:
- Type “REG” first
- Your CNIC number
- Your vehicle number
- The first letter of your province (for example, P for Punjab and S for Sindh)
- Your vehicle’s registration date
REG <CNIC> <Plate No> <Province Code> <Registration Date>
Make sure the mobile number and vehicle are registered on your CNIC. These four details complete the basic registration process.
How to Get the Petrol Relief Token
Registration is only the first step. Once you have successfully registered, you need a fuel relief token before purchasing subsidised petrol.
The government has instructed registered users to send:
TOK to 9771 before visiting the petrol station.
The system will provide a token number. At the petrol station, the user can show the token to receive the applicable fuel relief.
This digital token system is intended to make the process easier while also helping the government monitor how the subsidy is being distributed.
When Will the Scheme Start?
The rollout is being introduced in phases.
The government said the scheme would begin in Islamabad from the night between Monday and Tuesday (September 15 and 16), while the rest of Pakistan, including Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, would receive the facility from the night between Wednesday and Thursday (September 16 and 17).
The Prime Minister’s Rs100-per-litre petrol relief scheme is intended to provide immediate assistance to motorcycle users, rickshaw drivers and owners of small cars at a time when fuel costs are putting additional pressure on household budgets.
